Samsung has said that the Epic 4G will launch with Android 2.1, and of course the phone will have its "Smart Life" Android UI. (Many people call it TouchWiz, but it's not... TouchWiz is for Windows Mobile 6, and Smart Life is for Android.)

However, given that Android 2.2, coming May 19th, will feature Adobe Flash 10.1, many users will want to upgrade to Android 2.2 after they get their Epic 4G. Are you going to wait until your carrier (and Samsung, because they'd have to design a new Smart Life UI for 2.2) release Android 2.2 in an OTA official update, or are you going to hack 2.2 onto your Epic 4G as soon as you can?

I can safely say that when I get my Epic 4G, I'm ditching "Smart Life" 2.1 and going with Android 2.2. I'm not a big fan of the "Smart Life" UI and I'd rather have the Flash support.

What do you guys think?

I want to give "smart life" a try first. And who knows, Flash 10.1 may be available for 2.1 devices, perhaps as part of Google's attempt to end the fragmentation.

I'm not afraid to root/mod, but I won't make a decision until I know what S life looks/feel like IRL.

Hmm, it would have to depend what the difference is if markinct id right and Adobe can be updated to Flash 10.1 then probably not, but unless there will be a big jump then probably.

Hi electrofreak. I actually pre-ordered this phone based on your processor differentiation blog post. I liked that, very helpful for a guy like myself who will research a phone for weeks before purchasing.

I will be ditching the touchwhizz as soon as a method for upgrading safely to 2.2 is stumbled upon.  I have had a Nexus One and a Milestone (euro-droid) in the past, and the nexus one was incredibly easy to get customised firmware working on. If there is as good a method for this galaxy s then I will be dumping 2.1 as soon as I receive the device.

To be quite honest, the phone looks a bit like an iPhone, and so does touchwhizz, with the bar across the bottom with the grey background and your main 4 icons that are on each screen. I know it's a lot thinner physically, but it still has that chrome edging. I really like stock android, and however good the music player looks in touchwhizz I would rather have the stock android, especially if the "450% faster" claim is true.

I know that 450% speed increase is only on one benchmark, and it only takes slight optimisation to achieve this, but if the same applies across the board for the rest of the OS then I will be jumping ship to the yoghurty frozen goodness  immediately.

I like seeing someone so well-informed before purchase Happy There's so much misinformation out there, it took a lot of work to dig through the BS.

I do hope you didn't make your decision entirely upon my article however; I'm waiting until I hear enough reports about build quality and reliability before I put in an order myself (though, by the time it reaches the US this information should be available). The Epic 4G is an amazing phone on paper, I'm hoping I can get my hands on one for some real tangible one-on-one time before I make my commitment. Yes, I'm a pretty indecisive SOB. Happy

I'm with you on this one, and the recent announcement that Flash 10.1 will only be supported on Android 2.2 reinforces my decision to upgrade as soon as I get the chance.

Bad news: I've heard second-hand that Samsung has a way of withholding proprietary drivers from developers or the public so that it's virtually impossible for a group like XDA Developers to produce a compatible version of a newer build of Android.

Good news: http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2010/05/26/samsung-galaxy-s-announced-in-asia-will-get-froyo-update/

Samsung says it will get Froyo. As everyone with a Behold II (still running 1.6 after being promised 2.0) knows, this might not be worth much given Samsung's track record, but here's hoping Samsung will make efforts to improve their reputation with the Epic 4G.

From my point of view, TouchWiz 3.0 running on Epic 4G is something to be glad about. The improvements it adds to Android 2.1 are minor but with nice results

If you didn't see it yet, check the review by gsmarena. It also includes some good videos where you can see the small differences:

I'm probably going to keep on the touchwiz on it, after watching those videos it seems pretty snappy, and fast, so that is the only reason I would think abiut switching to Froyo, but it is fast so I probably won't.

Actually I'm not going to for sure.

hi everyone I'm selling my nexus one to my friend and I want to buy either an Iphone 4 or this galaxy S. I don't want to ask u which one is better, because I like android and I also like the iphone, they bought have big pros and cont like no flash for a 5mp camera thats soo stupid, or no flash player for apple anyways.

I want to now if the multitouch experience of the galaxy s is similar to the iphone multitouch.

Nexus one for me is perfect if it wasn't for the multitouch not even close to iphone experience.

(I'm sorry for my poor eng and I hope you understood my question)

Thanks in advance

Will this hurt warranty?, will it affect boot time?, and is it going to be hard and energy/time consuming?, what about battery life?

Otherwise flash 10.1> anything Big Smile

Some new updates I saw online..

http://top10.com/mobilephones/news/2010/07/android_2_2_incoming_for_samsung_galaxy_s/

Quote
Samsung's high end Epic 4G smartphone is set to get an update that will bring with it version 2.2 of the Android platform, the company has confirmed.

Epic 4G phones will come with Android 2.1 and be upgradeable to Android 2.2 which will support Adobe Flash 10.1," said Samsung via its Twitter account.

It is clear that Samsung, like Google, is pushing the fact that Android 2.2 offers native support for Flash whilst Apple has completely booted the platform from its new iPhone software.

Samsung will have to take time and make sure that its TouchWiz interface, which sits on top of the standard Android offering, is fully compatible with version 2.2 of the platform before it launches the Epic 4G update.

Available now, the handset teams great built-in Google apps as well as the chance to download thousands more from the Android Market.

The phone is also home to a five megapixel camera, an expansive touchscreen, a media player and video editing software.
