Sprint pulls Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 (Froyo) update; data connectivity, SD card issues

Not a ton of good news this week for Samsung handset owners awaiting software updates. Just three days after a highly-anticipated, Android 2.2 update began flowing to Epic 4G handsets, the code has pulled from update servers. Citing increased support calls, Sprint is looking to find the root cause of several, pesky problems.

“The issues being reported are related to data connectivity following the upgrade and SD card issues when attempting to access photos, music, etc,” reads a moderator forum post. “If you are experiencing these issues, a hard reset has been reported to resolve the problems.”

Hard reset?! Ouch. No word on who/what is at fault or when the update might be ready to download again.

Not for everyone.  Quite a few of the issues found on the sprint community forum (http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/63207?tstart=0) I have personally experienced (checkerboard/tearing in web browser, SD card contents going missing for extended periods of time but then reappearing) but also have encountered an unplanned phone reboot after attempting to start wi-fi hotspot (built in one) as well as randomly losing data connectivity despite having full bars (the process of enabling/disabling 4g 'kick-started' the 3g into working again).  This on an unrooted phone that was wiped clean prior to the install.

I too have had a unplanned reboot a few times.  This morning, the bluetooth failed while connecting to my car.  The car said it was connect and Pandora said it was playing via bluetooth, however the bluetooth icon in the status bar didn't show connection and nothing was working.

Then the phone vibrated 2 or 3 times and the screen went blank, eventually rebooting.

I attribute those issues to user error, I moderate 2 other forums for the epic centered around developement aside from this one, one with roughly 30,000 members, and another with over 200,000

None of which have any issues with the update

I did a hard refresh of 2.1 and updating to 2.2.  What error did I commit, cause I'd love to do it right.

Yeah, love that answer as well.  Too funny.  I have zero doubt there are a lot of folks that didn't follow directions or were doing questionable things that led to having issues.  That being said, I'd love to know what 'user error' one could possibly encounter with wiping the phone, downloading the exe, installing the exe.  Glad you apparently have the golden children who could do no wrong (despite this being easy stuff) but if truly all those folks had no issues, it's more likley a matter of misinformation or incredible luck.

Mine was an automatic update. I received a message saying it was time to update and that it would take several minutes. I clicked OK.

Besides the Net browser and GPS functions being slower (GPS wouldn't work at all yesterday on the road), I'm also stuck in a force-quit situation when I try to add volume to sounds. I'm currently stuck with no ringer and now e-mail notification noise. Any attempt at changing the settings is met with a freeze and force quit message, whether in general phone settings, e-mail, or gmail applications.

I would like to correct this. Is a hard reset in order? If so, how do I do that? Also, will I lose all of my purchased apps, or is purchase data stored on the Market's server?

Thanks in advance. I'm an old BlackBerry user who has begun to miss his old dependable BB like a man who leaves his wife for a shiny mistress who's all show and misses the good old days. Not too many bells and whistles, but it always worked when I needed it to...

Purchased apps are stored in the market for redownload, free apps are not, those having issues who have corrected them have seemed to do so with a hard reset (settings, privacy, factory reset)

A hard reset of 2.2, or of 2.1 prior to installing 2.2.

Don't get me wrong.  The issues I'm having are few and hard between.  I think the problems I'm experiencing with 2.2 are worth the GPS fixes and enhancements.  I actually just tested my GPS on a known geocache.  At ground zero, the Epic read 2 feet away...  it use to read 30 to 50 feet away.  I'm very satisfied with that.  Also the H.264 codec on the video camera is much nicer all the way around.

2.2 after install

I'm already installed 2.2 (obviously) and installed all my apps.  Do you recommend at this point I do a hard reset, then load my apps again?

Also, should I do anything with the SD card while doing all this?  Format it perhaps?

I'm having hot spot connection issues after doing the manual 2.2 update. I'll be in either 3G or 4G mode, with great signal and phone next to laptop. Chrome, IE and Firefox all have problems loading pages now. "can't find server" is the common error. I'll do a refresh and the page will load. Sometimes I'll have to refresh a few times. Yahoo IM will drop its connection for a few seconds then re-connect. Outlook will report can't find servers as well.

@bonemaro yes hard reset and redownload apps, if u'd like u can also move the contents of ur sd to ur pc, do a full format, and move ur files back

@chance_in_sargent i believe they reduced the amount of time dramatically for which the 3g and 4g modems go into sleep mode (this is to give better battery life on normal everyday usage as a mobile device) so if u happen to go inactive on ur pc web based programs for a few u probably have to refresh to get the active data connection going again, since ur modem is sleeping
