I received this update OTA today. My Epic is rooted. Do I need to unroot to perform update. Is it a worthwhile update?

There's a few important fixes yes. Are you rooted and "unmodified" or have you changed anything since rooting? If nothing is changed you should be able to update. If anything is channged the update will fail and you'll need to flash stock or wait for a custom rom based on EL30.

After rooting I installed Titanium Backup and restored my stuff. That's all.

You'll lose root and have to reroot after the update if it works but there's no risk in trying. It will either work or fail the checksum. If the checksum fails it won't try to install anything.

I clicked on the reboot and install button and received an error message of an unsuccessful update. I pulled the battery out and put it back in and re-booted. I'm back where I was and no longer get the new update to install message. This is fine with me. For the way I use my phone it's great. If I get bored I may go through the process of backing up, re-installing a stock version, doing the update, re-rooting, re-installing Titanium backup and then restore. Right now it seems like too much effort for very little benefit. I'll be eligible to get an iPhone on Sprint in June. When the iPhone 5 come out is when I'll switch. Until then I'll coast in with what I have and pass my Epic 4G down to one of my sons.

It's worth the effort. First is the removal of a privacy invading software which is known as Carrier IQ (which will even make a very small difference in battery), gps is greatly improved and way more reliable, speaker feedback is fixed for speakerphone calls, based off a newer android version (which will always mean other bug fixes and better overall stability), ect.

Ok, so  I am rooted as well and experienced the same issue with unable to update to the new EI30.  I also reboot and still at 22.  I don't care about being at EI30,  I have removed everything I didn't want.  Anyways, is there anyway to stop the phone for checking for updates?  I am sure that there is a apk that I can get rid off.

When it tries to install and fails pull the battery while it's in recovery, put it back in, and boot the phone. I believe I've read around this nulls the update push. I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want this update though. It actually includes some important and much needed fixes.

Nothing but reruns on tV tonite. I used Odin to put eco5 (froyo) back on my epic. I then did OTA updates to EI 122 then EL 30. I then rooted using clockwork mod, re-downloaded titanium pro backup and did a restore and now I'm good to go. Thanks Mr QB King 77 for your YouTube how to's.

Ok, I figured out how to update without re-rooting.

I followed this video and it worked great...

I had to re-apply the GPS fix though
