My Epic 4G unexpectedly lowers its sound volume for incoming phone calls and for alarms. This happens even though I have all the sliders and the outside volume "clicker" set to the highest possible volume.

I was told by a store service person that he has the same problem with his Epic 4G, that it's a known problem by Samsung, and that Samsung is working on a software fix. The store reinstalled all the factory software on my phone but the problem reoccurs.

Until Samsung provides a software fix, the store person tells me there is no fix. The only temporary workaround is to take out the battery and then put the battery back in. This seems to work for a day or two. Then the volume drops again and I have to do the battery out-in deal again.

The store person didn't know of any date for the fix. Is anyone aware of any information about this issue?

I'm new to this forum, so if a thread has already been started on this, please just paste the link here. Thanks.

The store rep doesn't know what he's talking about. First off pulling your battery while the system is active can cause additional issues to your software. The volume issue is probably just a bad install of the original software (which can happen with any software, it's easy for data to become corrupted during transfers/installs). I would have them reinstall your stock firmware, or you can do it yourself by dl'ing the updater from the samsung site (note: you will lose your data unless you back it up via root or another method)

It is a known problem with the last update. A reinstall did not fix it. You could go back to a previous version that did not have the problem.

I got rid of it by installing the leaked gingerbread software. It works great, no problems.
there is a thread here in the updates section that has a video to walk you through it.
