If anyone is still stuck with EB13 and waiting for the EC05 OTA update, a quick fix was identified at AndroidCentral forum a couple of days ago and it worked for me as well as numerous others: Go to Android Market and update existing applications on your Epic or download a new application from the Market.  The EC05 update will be pushed to your phone within minutes.

Best of luck with the new build, EC05 did fix the problem for me of apps frequently opening in landscape orientation when the phone was vertical and not switching to portrait orientation without a struggle.

Awesome!  I still have to horizontally calibrate it laying on its front to make it re-orientate quickly.

?? calibrate? please explain.
Just got my update from EB13 to EC05 a couple of days ago OTA. Just had exercise patience.  Seems OK except a few apps do not work any more.

I went to the market and updated some apps and almost immediately I was notified of a system update which I started. Now I'm looking at a white triangle with a yellow exclamation point in it above a little green android guy. It appears to be frozen. Is this what the update looks like or do I have to reboot this phone or is it lunched.

Well the phone became a brick. I downloaded Odin and the original software and reflashed the phone and it's in the same state as when I bought it. It's downloading the froyo update over the air now and I have my contacts. I'll have to see what's on the SD card to see what I lost. Then I'll have to figure out how to get all my apps back.

Just updated my wife's epic (she was out of town but still no OTA update as of this evening) using the go to market, update apps trick, and EC05 began downloading seconds later, and completed successfully.

Pat E., I've read about the yellow exclamation point popping up when attempting OTA update if the phone had been rooted, was yours rooted?  Anyway sorry for your trouble, best of luck with the rest of the process.

Yeah. My Epic was rooted. After I install all of my free apps and figure out how to back them up, I'll root again. The Odin thing makes it very easy to get your phone back if you mess up. I'm going to look into loading a custom Froyo or Gingerbread Rom now that I see how easy it is to return to stock.

Prior to the update I also had my phone rooted. The update worked with no problems but then my rooted apps quit working properly. So, I used Odin3 to go back to 2.1 and then did OTA update to 2.2. I had more problems with getting my computer to recognize my phone than anything else.

That's good to know, especially since we will probably never get an official version of Gingerbread, I've been wondering how complicated the Odin process was, sounds like it may be worth a try at some point.

From what I read at Android Central you may have a few options, including the following:
1) If your phone is still operational, you can update to one of the unofficial rooted versions of EC05 that are available on AndroidCentral.com posted by user Paul 627g.
2) You can Odin back to stock eclair, then update OTA.

Basically I believe it boils down to 2 overall choices: 1) Unroot the phone, perform the update, then reroot the phone if desired, and 2) install an unofficial rooted version of EC05.

I am fairly new to Android and have not yet explored the options of rooting my phone or Odining my Android OS so if I have this all mixed up someone please correct.

Thanks
