Since ROM is read only, I don't see the advantage of more ROM on a smartphone.  Can someone please enlighten me.

The ROM in the phone.  The new Epic has 16GB of ROM and 1GB of RAM.  I thought that the ROM really only held the OS info.  Since you can't write to it, you can't store apps on it, right?

But... The Epic doesn't have 16gb of rom. It has 1gb of rom. You sure your not thinking of the 16gb external sd card that's included with it? Which would be for your external storage of course.

rom has no advantiges, its the place of the basesoft of a phone, android phones convert from internal memory to rom if necessary, atleast at samsung epic http://www.phonesvilla.com/android/402-samsung-epic-4g.html

It also doesn't have 1gb of ram either. It has 512mb.

Where did you get your specs from?

Zen, are you sure that you aren't referring to the Epic (the first one).  I am talking about the second one.  The specs that  i got came from Sprint's website. http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/phone_details.jsp;jsessionid=A75B22D972C2102A8C28D6982B9D2033.shop25?prodId=dvc5890001prd&deviceSKUId=58900014&flow=AAL&planSKUId=&ptn=&tabId=dt_phones

Yeah that was sort of my point.  I am under the impression that just like in a computer, the ROM in a cell phone can't be used to read/write from.  It is basically where the OS resides and you can flash it but it can't be used for RAM or storage.  So I didn't see the big advantage that they were advertising about having 16GB of ROM.

Note:  And I do realize the in a computer, the OS doesn't reside in ROM...lol.

First off this is a forum for the Epic 4g, not the Epic 4g Touch. The specs I stated are correct for the device this forum is based for. As far as why they advertise the ROM capacity for the Epic Touch? That's because it's 16gb of internal storage for apps and data PLUS external sd card compatibility up to a 32gb card. I'd say that's worth mentioning.

ah, didn't realize that this was for just the first epic and not the second one.  Sorry.  Anyways, I still don't get it.  How can you store apps and media on Read Only Memory  How do you write apps and media to Read Only memory???  It is read only.

It shouldn't be read only. Your system partition is but your data partition should be r/w.
