By "open programs" are you referring to the running programs widget? When i use an app, it will show as a running program, and i turn all off when i am through using them. If i end all running programs, they all seem to stay off unless i open one. Voice mail stays off also but I suspect that if a VM is received, it will start the VM app to alert you to a new vm, and will continue to run until stopped. I have not used media hub.

The chances of finding out what really is going on are so absurdly remote that the only thing to do is to say hang the sense of it and just keep yourself occupied. DA HHGG

The place that I always see it running, and the OP may be referring to this is when you go to Settings>Applications>Running Services, Media Hub seems to start up by itself (along with Google Talk and DRM as well).  If so, I'm seeing the same thing and haven't been able to find anything that shuts them down for sure.  They keep turning back on.  I'd be interested to know if anyone knows how to shut them down for good until I need them.

I wonder what the difference is between a running service and a running application. There is a widget called program monitor, you can end programs and they stay off. Services seem to have a mind of their own.

Re - surfacing this topic about running services. My phone seems to get bogged down, lags when sliding from screen to screen, lags ad jerks when using games etc. If i turn off google talk in the running services, everything is back to normal. The problem is that it always turns itself back on. I also attempted to force quit in app management, but it still comes back on. I suspect the only way to fix this is to root, but i am hoping someone might have an alternative suggestion. I do not know what google talk is, but the behavior of the app suggests that it is some sort of snoop ware. I do not care about the snooping - got nothing to hide- but want the lagging to stop.

Leave system processes alone, let the system run as it's meant to

by "system processes" are you referring to "running services"? what does google talk do anyway, other than slow down my phone?
there are several downloaded apps that also are always on in the running services. is there a reason for them to be running continuously even though i am not using them?

Just cause its listed as running doesn't mean its actively using cpu, and the way memory management works on android devices is entirey different then that of ur home pc, low memory does not = low performance
