I love my Epic 4G but hate the battery life.
I am always charging the phone or held hostage to my charger.
I use app killer and try to reduce what I do but it still doesn't last a day.

I picked up a second battery and charge it using an AC clip charger.

Here is the battery I purchased from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Capacity-Lithium-Ion-EB575152VA-Captivate-Fascinate/dp/B0041IWZLE/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1284182375&sr=1-3

Battery last as long as the original and I am happy with it.

I would actually suggest buying a few of these. the standard battery is a 1500 mah battery and this battery is a 3000mah battery. with that the average user can get atleast a full day and a night life without "shiza, im late for work".

Where do you see that it is 3000mah? The specs list 1500mah and the anecdotal evidence suggests it lasts "as long as" or "slightly longer than" the original.

I would like to find a higher capacity battery too ... but I'm not convinced this is it.

I looked at the Seido Battery as well, but it is listed as not yet available (pre-order only).  Seido's website also has it listed as still in development.

I got my Epic on 1 Oct when I could upgrade from my Moment.  The first few days, the battery would not last very long, but I kept charging it every night (and in between if needed) and I am finding that the charge lasts longer and longer as time goes on.  I even have my BT headset connected and it goes almost all day now, depending on usage.

BTW, I bought an iPad on 6 Sep for a special reason - I have never been a big fan of Apple and still do not want the iPhone - and I have found that the battery in the iPad has the same problems of quick drainage when using it the way I would my Moment (or now my Epic), i.e., for web surfing, navigation, etc.  Not being an Apple fanboi (or in my case fangurl), I do have to say, though, that I love the large screen and find it is easily carried around, but am looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy Tab for increased portability and expansion slot, as well as it being Android.

Actually, I am a real fan of WebOS because I have not found any other operating system that so beautifully and easily allows TRUE multitasking (not just rapid app or web page switching).  Unfortunately, my Palm Pre was just too slippery for my aged hands and the keyboard was too small for real comfort and long usage.

Lastly, and to get back to the topic of battery life, in all the phones I have had in the last three to five years (I change phones a lot, but the Epic feels like a "Keeper"), I find that the battery life improves after a few weeks of regular charging without ever letting it drain completely.

DewWorm,
Thanks for the tips for maximizing battery life.  I didn't know if it were best to let it run down all the way before re-charging, or keeping it charged to the max as much as you can.  My cameras and camcorders say to discharge 100% before recharging, but I suppose Cellphone batteries are of a different technology.

It's a shame that the Epic user manual and no other online source explained how to get the most life and power from a battery.  There seems to only be tips on how to reduce power useage.  Thanks again.

You are welcome, but the idea came from the user guide from my old Palm Treo 650, and I have simply continued the practice with each new phone I get. I have seen tekkies tell folks on forums to drain their batteries, but I have never done it because that idea just seemed to be based on old technology batteries. At any rate, I have been happy with the results I get when using Palm's original directions.

I used to be involved in reviewing technical manuals and I can't get out of the mindset of  critically reviewing user guides, most of which leave much to be desired from the user's perspective. Ideally, companies should hire ordinary (non-technical) folks to sit alongside and perform the steps with the person writing the user guide so the writer could respond to questions the "user" comes up with along the way, but that takes too much time and money. Of course, user forums have become vital for filling in the information gaps, while doubling as a way to build a sense of community around a product or service.

Ur issue is the task killer, take it from a rom builder for the moment and now the epic (soon), task killers "do not save battery" they cause system instability and cause certain apps to cycle themselves causing more usage of cpu (which is what drains ur battery "not" memory being in use) also freeing up memory does not speed up ur phone, as the system is already built to manage used memory and free up what is needed as it is needed, apps sitting idle (meaning no cpu usage) in memory is just androids base for multitasking capability, items sitting idle in memory do not draw battery or slow the system (unless ur phone has been on for days, u should really reboot once every few days like u would a computer, or at least I do and trust me its a good idea)

My epic runs anywhere from 12-48hrs depending on usage, I've never had a day where I got less then 12hrs regardless of how hard I've pushed it

I wanted to keep everyone up to date on the battery I purchased.

The battery is still lasting as long as the original.
I am happy with the purchase.

I will update the battery status again in a few months.

I thought about buying an extra battery, but than I wouldn't want to carry that around. Instead I found an extended battery at samsung epic accessories. It gives me just enough extra juice to last me through the entire day until I get home to put it back on the dock.

Hello,
There is an extended life battery with battery door on Ebay for about $13.97 with $7.00 shipping. They say they will make a case for it sometime in the near future and will discount  the case for those that buy the battery and door from them. I just ordered today so I don't have more info than that. http://cgi.ebay.com/Sprint-Epic-4G-AT-T-Samsung-Captivate-Extended-Battery-/130465404050?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item1e60581492#ht_1564wt_1143

I have EVO, wife has Epic (she’s does more texting).  I have 3,500 mAh extended battery, she thinks extended battery is UGLY and cumbersome for texting.

Solved problem with Vivatar 1,100 mAh USB chargeable battery w/ micro adaptor ($11 @ Office Depot). Looks funny but she doesn’t need it that often and says it feels ok.

I built an external battery pack for mine from a cheap battery wall charger and test leads that provides 16,700 mAh (yep – almost 17 amps ugh, ugh, ugh). Uses several different types of rechargeable batteries (3 x 3,500’s for EVO, 2 x 500 general, 1,100 general, 2,600 mAh EVO free from Sprint just for asking, and 1,500 original). You swap out the batteries when depleted and don’t have to take the phone back cover off. Good for flying and watching movies. Will work on ANY device that uses USB std , mini, or micro plug for charging.

Here are photos of my external battery pack. Only limitation is how many batteries do you have? Secret is hook test leads attached to the red / black wires of cord with female USB receptacle. Added 20ga wire for strength to USB wires to test leads.

Charge batteries, leave in charger, remove from wall, hook adaptor cord to +/- of wall charger and away you go. I put one of the general batteries in the same string as the wall charger / phone in case something goes wrong. Rather lose $5 / $11 battery than phone.

By the way 2 x 3,500 mAh EVO + charger = $20 EBay free shipping when I brought mine. Individual batteries I think are $6 / $7.

Can’t see pretty green light, but that’s how you know it’s ready to charge phone.

Little overkill but can charge 3 devices as shown, 6 if I add another splitter.

Also have a $12 solar charger from Harbor Fright I can use for USB devices and 12 vdc Pandigital tablet.

Working on wind power using old plastic fan. Will never use, just want to see if I can.
